[Summit] more bad mail experiences

As far as I can tell, we have had reliable mail service since moving to
Mayflower St last summer. Our problem has been with getting mail forwarded
from our old house, near the Armory on the West End of Prov. Despite
multiple change of address forms submitted, even more phone calls to
supervisors at the Olneyville PO, notes on the door of our old house, and
pleas to the mail carriers, we got maybe two pieces of forwarded mail.
Luckily we are friends with the people who bought the house, and they even
now continue to get us errant mail, which recently included our former
tenants IRS check. (their mail never got forwarded, either). In addition,
people on our old street routinely got other people's mail, often in big
piles. There was essentially a resident-driven mail delivery system on our
old street! The postal workers there all cited overwork as their problem --
the regular carrier got transferred, no one wanted to replace him, so the PO
rotated and divided up the area among other carriers, who were given extra
streets to deliver in addition to their usual territory. I don't know how
common this is, but it was talked about in a way that made it sound routine.
While there are always exceptions, I seriously doubt that our mail problems
are due to negligent mail carriers -- every one I have talked to has been
extremely nice, concerned, and rather tired looking -- and problems are
obviously not limited to 02906. It is likely city-wide, on an administrative
level, and it is very disturbing to me. Clearly a little directed outrage is
appropriate. Maybe a petition is not a bad idea, to start.
I, for one, will begin surveying my friends to see who has had similar
problems. Until now, I thought we were the only ones. Ellen & Bob, Mayflower
St.
