[Summit] pedestrian hit & run accident Friday

To be honest, there is a problem with Hope St, but I hesitated to even
mention this because I personally fear someone will want to put a stop sign
or traffic light at the corner of Fifth, Sixth or Seventh/Overhill which
would most likely mean I WOULD HAVE TO MOVE. I am chemically sensitive and
the stopping and starting/accelerating would radically increase the amount
of car exhaust. Already on some days, when 95 backs up, and tons of cars
take Hope Street as an alternate route, the pollution is so bad that I have
take medication. (which can NOT be taken daily).
Traffic was not like this when we moved here 11 years ago.
No one likes moving, but for us it would be especially disruptive. Besides
this being our home, it has otherwise worked out well for us, which can be
tricky to find with the sensitivities and health problems I have, especially
on a limited budget. In addition, we are also self employed, so all our
work materials would be disrupted.
Rude and criminal drivers are everywhere, but there is something especially
annoying weaving through the restaurant section of Hope Street. The ditsy
parking jobs and the window shopping drivers- choosing a restaurant from
their cars, really sets off the impatient drivers. They get past Seven
Stars and STEP on the GAS. But people come up the hill from Pawtucket pretty
fast too.
Maybe, but only maybe, a overhead sign bar or two, with blinking warning
light and with a sign "Hospital Area" and a posted speed limit, would help.
Since we moved here there have been a fair number of car accidents on the
three corners where you turn down to Miriam. The worst ones have involved
the Hospital. People going to visit sick loved ones are probably not
focusing fully on their driving. By far the worst accident involved a
college age man who had just come from seeing his seriously ill girl friend.
But I tend to doubt that any light will much help people spaced out by
distress over a sick person meeting speeding idiots who think they are above
the law.
Maybe some of us on Hope should offer our driveways to a cop who hasn't made
his ticket quota??? (Unfortunately our driveway is on the Sixth Street
side) And patrolling the congestion in the business area might help too.
Could the restaurants get together and buy some small lot for parking? Maybe
a house that is beyond fixing up, will come on the market, somewhere right
behind the rows of stores? Or would that be likely to become a hot spot for
trouble after hours??
Parkers really are a problem on Hope near Rochambeau.
