=============
As one of the people referred to in the original post, I will say the lever
of cooperation between Miriam and other activities in the neighborhood is
improved, but even as we work with the hospital staff and administration
more, we continue to maintain our vigilance and willingness to speak out. I
maintain a correspondence with those confronting Lifespan on neighborhood
issues on the south side around RI Hospital, sharing occassional
experiences.
Just for the record, my thoughts on the N Main St project are that we may or
may not be able to strongly influence what happens on N Main St, there are
forces much more powerful than a neighborhood association at work, and
millions of dollars of investment needed. But keeping an eye on things,
studying it the best we can, including calling in professionals where it is
useful to provide information we can not obtain on our own, and pushing for
what people in the community believe would be the most beneficial is more
than worth it even if it costs a few thousand dollars. Doing nothing or
waiting for someone else to move is unlikely to give this communty the best
solutions. Life is a bit of an experiment, and if you sit passivley it
happens to you rather than you making it happen. N Main St is clearly a
case of trying to make it happen can only be a good thing. Greg Gerritt
