In case you don't already know this, if you are unsure on what specific
kinds of bees look like you can do a search via "google" or "dog pile" for
"images". That option choice is right above where you type in the name of
what you are looking for. I only noticed this option a few months ago,
myself.

In the steps or in ground, around here, they are most likely to be "yellow
jackets", which are actually wasps. They can be very aggressive by day, but
on a very cool night, you can sometimes simply drown ground nests by filing
them with water. I don't like to kill anything, but yellow jackets in high
traffic areas can result in a lot of stings.

We had a real problem two years ago- with both myself and people simply
walking by on the sidewalk getting stung. The landlord put poison but it
didn't work (and can kill other good bees in the area). Then in desperation
I went out on a very cool summer night at 2am and hosed them down and
physically dug them out of the railroad ties and stamped the sleepy yellow
jackets and on all the egg sacks too- at least 4 dozen of them! It took
over an hour and was not a fun job, but it worked.
