[Summit] Auction To Benefit Opposition To Clarke's Variances

Do you really need $ to oppose a variance? I thought you just had to show
up with your posse at the relevant meeting of the Zoning Board of Review. A
little over six years ago, a bunch of neighbors did this and successfully
opposed a variance for legal conversion of a two-family property on our
street which had for many years illegally housed three different groups of
tenants.
That same meeting featured a clearly well-financed request for a variance
from The Music School, which wanted to move into the old Katherine Gibbs
property (now luxury condos) on the corner of Butler Avenue and South Angell
Street. Many neighbors turned out to oppose that variance as well, and to
my knowledge, didn't spend a dime.
Despite the dog-and-pony show presented by The Music School (complete with
lawyers and architectural renderings), the Zoning Board of Review quite
appropriately saw the school as a giant traffic generator, which would be
completely inappropriate for the neighborhood. The Music School has since
found alternate digs in East Providence...
