PRESS RELEASE
PROJECT TO RESTORE HISTORIC STATUE RECEIVES BOOST FROM THE CHAMPLIN FOUNDATIONS
Henry Bowen Anthony Fountain stands as an historic centerpiece in Lippitt Park
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PROVIDENCE – Mayor David N. Cicilline announced that the Henry Bowen Anthony Fountain in Lippitt Park has moved one step closer towards full restoration. The Champlin Foundations has awarded the Parks Department a $58,900 grant to supplement efforts to restore the granite fountain to its original splendor. The fountain, which is the centerpiece of Lippitt Park, was erected in 1940 in memory of the late Henry Bowen Anthony, a United States Senator who represented Rhode Island from 1859 to 1884.
“The Champlin Foundations’ generous contribution will go a long way towards helping us to bring new life to an historic fountain that honors a Rhode Islander who dedicated his life to serving others,” said Mayor Cicilline. “Thanks to the Champlin Foundations and the contributions of the Summit Neighborhood Association, the restored Anthony fountain will greatly enhance the experience of generations of families who visit Lippitt Park.”
The restoration project calls for installing new plumbing and lighting as well as a code compliant water recirculation and filtration system. The Anthony fountain is structurally sound and was designed in the Moderne style by Jackson, Robertson & Adams, the former Providence firm that designed the Providence County Courthouse.
The Summit Neighborhood Association also contributed to the restoration project by raising $10,000 and by assisting the Parks Department in the Champlin application. The City of Providence has earmarked $112,000 for the project. The Anthony fountain, when restored, will join three other public outdoor fountains in Providence: the Bajnotti fountain in Burnside Park, the DePasquale fountain in DePasquale Plaza and the Clements fountain in Jacqueline Clements Park.
