We should consider ourselves lucky to have such narrow streets. Emlyn, perhaps parked cars can make moving cars a menace in very particular and very rare instances, but studies have repeatedly shown that vehicles travel at slower speeds on narrow streets, which reduces both accident frequency and severity. The fact that it is hair-raising prevents you from flying around the corner without braking! I don't know the details of the incident on halloween, but it doesn't take a big difference in speed to go from knocked down to fatal.
Parking near the corners does restrict visibility, but it is a matter of enforcing the law. If one really cared about the safety of the little children, one would be calling the Lt every single day telling him to ticket offenders, not worrying about creating a built environment that promotes speeding.
About emergency vehicles, I think you would be hard pressed to find an actual example of an emergency response failing due to a minute lost on 8th street, but I am certain that over the years, we have saved lives by having narrow streets. The effect is more subtle than a fire truck honking its horn at 2am, but overall we are better off this way.

Today's Providence Journal news blog carried the sad news that Mr. Afolabi

Neighbors:
In the midst of the discussion on parking, I wonder if anyone is able to lend me any CDs by Pink Floyd for a day or two, particularly early albums. I'll be happy to pick up and deliver, leave a deposit, etc., whatever arrangement suits you.
Thanks.
email me off list at the address above.

Bob, try the Rochambeau Library. My son took out some Pink Flloyd CDs (Dark
Side of the Sun etc.) for a school project a few years back. Posting this
on-list in case anyone else wonders where to find CDs.

Does anyone know if the City has considered the following, which was used effectively where I used to live?
Alternate side parking: M, W, F, Su on one side, T, R, Sat on the other. Move your car to the other side by 8:00am or you get ticketed (or towed during snow).
This arrangement has three advantages: 1) no junk cars left on the street for days/weeks/months. 2) Both sides of the street get plowed over 48 hours, and 3) Two cars can still pass (which they can't really do with cars parked on both sides of (with apologies to Andrew) my street.
Yes, it was sometimes annoying to have to get up at 8am on Sunday to move the car. And yes, the city would have to put up signs.
Any thoughts about this sort of plan?

I thought about that---but there is parking only one side of the
street...This would we be excluded?----Howie

I used to live in Pawtucket which has no overnight ban. Many
multi-family houses there do not provide sufficient off street parking for
all tenants and the streets become very crowded and difficult to
negotiate. I found it to be a nightmare! My driveway was constantly
difficult to get out of because of the number of cars parked either blocking
it or very close. I like that Providence does not have overnight on street
parking and would strongly oppose a change!

This is a pragmatic plan which fully addresses all the street
cleaning, snow plowing, emergency vehicle clearance, etc. issues.
If any of the 24 foot wide streets around here presently allow parking
on two sides at any time, it will be news to me.
I kinda like how the occasional car parked on the "wrong" side of the
street keeps speeds down. I wonder if some residents, particularly on
10th street, purposely park on the wrong side for this very reason. A
parked car never hurt anyone. It is the moving ones you need to worry
about.
