Agreed--this is fairly shocking. (Was this common knowledge? Have the
libraries been in financial dire straights, or is it just overflow of the
city's woes?)

I know we pay taxes etc etc but for our part we'd gladly chip in to ensure
that the library never closed. If it's done on a neighborhood by
neighborhood basis, closings may not have to happen anywhere. Hope springs
eternal...
