Last year, after asking this myself,
I was told REGULAR household batteries no longer have mercury and don't get
recycled- throw in the trash!!!
(Personally I wonder how much battery acid from all our new gizmos is
helping percolate the mismanaged Johnston dump)
RECHARGEABLE batteries should be recycled, and can be taken to Whole Foods
or Staples, or could at the time.
Those new, energy efficient light bulbs, BTW, also are supposed to be
recycled because of mercury. They can be taken to Home Depot, including
long fluorescent tubes.
Stores collecting generally take back- whether you bought them there or not.

Anyone know of a reputable organization that accepts old cell phones
for recycling with a charitable purpose?
Thanks.
