  Wednesday 16 November 4:00pm   Energy Geopolitics after the Elections    With environmentalists calling upon global leaders to do more to stop global warming, Watson Institute senior fellow Jan Kalicki will discuss the challenges and opportunities presented by energy geopolitics following the U.S. presidential election. Titled "Energy Geopolitics after the Elections: The Struggle for Energy Security in Europe," the lecture will touch on issues of energy dependence within Europe and options for managing a potential issue down the road.    Wednesday 16 November 5:00pm   Artist Talk: RaMell Ross    The Department of Visual Art presents a talk by photographer and filmmaker RaMell Ross. Ross' photographic work has been featured in the New York Times, ESPN, The Washington Post and others. He is the director, producer and editor of Idiom (Hale County this Morning, this Evening), a feature-length film that follows the lives of two young men living in the historic American South told through real and fictional narratives.    Wednesday 16 November 6:00pm   James Roosevelt III to deliver Health Care in America lecture    Former CEO of Tufts Health Plan James Roosevelt III will deliver a lecture as part of the Healthcare in America lecture series, sponsored by the Warren Alpert Medical School. During his decade-long leadership of Tufts Health Plan, Roosevelt increased the number of members in the health plan to more than one million participants and expanded the health insurance company to Rhode Island and New Hampshire. Prior to his role with the company, Roosevelt served as the associate commissioner for retirement policy for the Social Security Administration. He is the grandson of former U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The lecture is part of a series that brings prominent leaders in the field of healthcare to engage in public discussions on campus. The event is free and open to the public, but  registration is required.    Wednesday 16 November 7:30pm   Classical Sitar Concert by Srinivas Reddy    The Contemplative Studies Initiative presents an evening of classical sitar music with musician Srinivas Reddy '98. Trained in the traditional gurushishya style with sitar maestro Pandit Nikhil Banerjee, Reddy has performed several recitals in the U.S. and India. Currently teaching at the Indian Institute of Technology in Gandhinagar, Reddy is the author of Giver of the Worn Garland and has three albums to his name.    Thursday 17 November 12:00pm   The Death of Zumbi    Marc Hertzman of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, will deliver a lecture titled "The Death of Zumbi: Suicide, Slavery, and History in Brazil and the Black Atlantic," as part of the Brazil Initiative. The lecture will focus on the history behind the death of Zumbi, a 17th-century leader of the runaway slave community in Brazil. Hertzman's talk will lead into a discussion about the trajectory and formation of modern Brazil and its racial mythologies.    Thursday 17 November 4:00pm   The CIA Then and Now    Over the last 50 years, the way United States officials have approached their intelligence objectives has changed. Boston University professor and former CIA operative Joseph Wippl will discuss this and more in a lecture titled "The CIA Then and Now: Espionage and Covert Action from the Cold War to the War on Terror," as part of the Security Seminar Series. Having served as an operations officer throughout the world including Mexico City, Berlin, Germany, and Vienna, Austria, Wippl has written about and discussed on a wide variety of issues related to the intelligence community.    Thursday 17 November 5:30pm   A reading by novelist Anakana Schofield    Novelist Anakana Schofield will read from her work as part of the Program in Literary Arts' Writers on Writing Reading Series. An Irish-Canadian writer, Schofield is the author of several works including of Martin John, which was named a New York Times' Editor's Choice. Schofield has also written reviews for several media outlets including The Guardian, The Irish Times, The Globe and Mail and The National Post.    Thursday 17 November 8:00pm to Sunday 20 November 2:00pm   Fall Dance Concert    The Department of Theatre and Arts and Performance Studies and Sock and Buskin present the annual Fall Dance Concert. The concert has traditionally featured choreography performances from several student dance groups on campus including Attitude, Fusion and imPulse. Running from Nov. 17-20, this year's concert is co-produced by Brown faculty members Michelle Bach-Coulibaly, Sydney Skybetter and Julie Adams Strandberg. All performances will be held in Lyman Hall, Ashamu Dance Studio, the Ruth J. Simmons Quadrangle. Showtimes are Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m.; Sunday at 2 p.m.  Tickets are $15 for general admission, $12 for seniors, and $7 for students with a Brown/RISD I.D.    Friday 18 November 4:00pm   Side Show Freaks and Circus Injuns    Several faculty members from various institutions will deliver a presentation of "Side Show Freaks & Circus Injuns," a work-in-progress theatrical play about indigenous culture. A discussion moderated by Adrienne Keene, assistant professor of American studies, will follow the excerpt presentations from the play. Performers include Monique Mojica, the Lawton Wehle Fitt ’74 artist-in-residence at Brown University, playwright and member of the Guna and Rappahannock Nations; LeAnne Howe, professor of American literature at the University of Georgia, Athens, novelist and member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma; and Jorge Luis Morejón, a lecturer at the University of the West Indies who has more than two decades of experience in theatre, opera, dance and performance-art experience. The event is sponsored by the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America in collaboration with the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies and the Brown Arts Initiative. Featuring tubist Gary Buttery and soprano Samantha Talmadge, the program includes a performance of Updike's Science, a series of five poems for voice and wind ensemble, John Mackey’s Undertow and Rossano Galante’s The Redwoods.    Saturday 19 November 8:00pm   Concert: Of Nature Composed    The Aurea Ensemble will deliver a multimedia concert performance led by artistic director Consuelo Sherba titled "Of Nature Composed," as part of the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities Series. The concert will combine spoken word poetry with contemporary and classic compositions. Featuring the work of several artists from varying genres, the event is part of a series intended to mark the centennial anniversary of the Pulitzer Prize. The event is free and open to the public.    Monday 21 November 2:30pm   Election 2016: Behind the Scenes    National Public Radio correspondent Mara Liasson will take part in a discussion about the 2016 election with David Corn '81, as part of the Watson Institute's 25th anniversary. Titled "Behind the Scenes," the discussion is part of a three-part interview series with Corn about the election before and after the results.     Friday 27 May 9:00am to Tuesday 31 January 4:45pm   The Black Shackle: African Americans and the Coal Economy    The Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice presents an exhibition that tells the stories of African Americans who migrated from the rural South to make their home in the coal fields of West Virginia, Tenn., and Eastern Kentucky. Titled "The Black Shackle: African Americans and the Coal Economy," the exhibition grew out of a partnership between the Southern Historical Collection, Karida Brown, and the Appalachian communities. Informed by more than 200 oral history interviews handled by Brown, a descendent of coal miners, the exhibition features recordings along with photographs, organizational records, and family papers that were offered to Brown.    Saturday 28 May 10:00am to Sunday 18 December 4:00pm   Brewed for Thought: A Cross-Cultural Exploration of Beer and Brewing    In celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Haffenreffer family's gift to Brown University, the Haffenreffer Museum Student Group has curated an exhibition titled "Brewed for Thought: A Cross-Cultural Exploration of Beer and Brewing." Devoted to beer cultures around the world, the exhibition will highlight the important role beer has in social gatherings throughout various parts of the world and in various settings including ceremonies, relationships and even medical treatment. The exhibition will feature objects linked to brewing and beer consumption from a broad range of communities including Bolivia, Peru, Kenya, Nepal, Tibet and the United States. Paying homage to the Haffenreffer family's roots as brewers, the objects will provide a context for how fermented beverages have been consumed for the last 2,500 years. The exhibition will be on display through December in the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology, the College Green. Exhibition hours are Tuesday-Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed Mondays and University holidays.    Tuesday 20 September 6:00am to Friday 23 December 5:00pm   A Hymn for the Brave: the Sharps and Humanitarian Work in World War II    The Brown University Library presents an exhibition titled "A Hymn for the Brave: the Sharps and Humanitarian Work in World War II." Featuring professional documents and personal records from the Martha and Waitstill Sharp Collection and the Robert Cloutman and Elisabeth Anthony Dexter papers, the exhibit tells the story of Brown alumna Martha Dickie and her husband Waitstill Sharp, who conducted relief missions in war-torn Europe from 1939 to the 1950s. They worked with alumnus Robert Dexter to rescue nearly 300 refugees and to provide aid to those living under Nazi occupation. The records will be on display through December 23, 2016, in the John Hay Library, 20 Prospect St. Exhibition hours are Monday through Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively; Closed on Saturdays and open from noon to 10 p.m. on Sundays.    Monday 10 October 9:00am to Wednesday 30 November 10:00pm   Traces of Memory: A Contemporary Look at the Jewish Past in Poland    From the Galicia Jewish Museum in Krakow, Poland, Brown RISD Hillel presents the inaugural exhibition of "Traces of Memory: A Contemporary Look at the Jewish Past in Poland." Offering a contemporary look at Jewish Poland, the exhibition features texts by Jonathan Webber and photographs of Chris Schwarz and Jason Francisco that reflect issues and processes rooted in the past. Adam Teller, associate professor of Judaic Studies, will offer opening remarks at an official opening being held on October 20 at 7 p.m. The exhibition will be on display through November 30 in Brown RISD Hillel, 80 Brown St. Hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 8 and 6 p.m., respectively.    Saturday 19 November 1:00pm to Sunday 5 February 4:00pm   And men turned their faces from there    The David Winton Bell Gallery presents Fatma Bucak's "And men turned their faces from there," an exhibition that addresses the Kurdish conflict in Turkey and the Turkish-Syrian border. Featuring video performances, photographs and installations that examine the human consequences of borders, Bucak's work touches on issues of media censorship, state violence and mass migration. An opening reception and discussion with the artist will be held on Friday, Nov. 18, in the List Art Center, Auditorium, 64 College St. The exhibition will be on display in the List Art Center lobby through February 5, 2017. Exhibition hours are Monday-Wednesday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., weekends from 1 to 4 p.m., and closed on University holidays and administrative closings.
