Although I got this message three or four different ways, they were all after 1 p.m. on the Friday before City Hall shut down for a three-day holiday weekend, which made me doubt how useful it would be to forward this.
But here goes.
Have a good Labor Day,
Dave

Yesterday, I joined Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, leaders from the U.S Conference of Mayors, and representatives from municipalities across the nation in a conference call discussing the impact of Hurricane Harvey and the needs of the Houston community. Our thoughts are with the City of Houston and people throughout Texas who have been impacted. Providence stands with the communities who have lost so much as they begin the rebuilding and recovery process.

On the call, Texas officials stressed the need for toiletries, cleaning supplies and diapers. I’m pleased to share that to meet these needs, the City of Providence will be accepting these items in new condition, as well as baby formula, non-perishable food and new clothing and blankets at Providence City Hall (25 Dorrance Street, Room 101, Mayor’s Center for City Services; Open 8:30AM-4:30PM) and the Providence Public Safety Complex (325 Washington Street, Open 24/7, residents are required to buzz in after 3:00PM). All donations should be dropped off by Friday, September 8. We will join regional efforts to transport the supplies to the Greater Houston Area in the following weeks.

To further support relief efforts, I am encouraging our community to come together and consider donating to the Greater Houston Community Foundation’s Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund, the United Way Harvey Recovery Fund or text ‘HARVEY’ to 90999 to make an immediate $10 contribution to the American Red Cross. Those looking to send checks or money orders can mail them to the Greater Houston Community Foundation, 5120 Woodway Drive, Suite 6000, Houston, TX 77056. Please feel free to call the Mayor’s Center for City Services at 3-1-1 with any questions regarding the coordinated support efforts.

A Community Led Vision for Kennedy Plaza
  |
|
In case you missed it, this week we unveiled a vision for the future of Kennedy Plaza that was created through a robust public engagement planning process. Vibrant public spaces are a big part of Providence’s reputation as a fun and captivating destination. I’m thrilled that this vision will help transform Kennedy Plaza into a true civic heart for our city by taking into account what we heard directly from bus riders, surrounding property owners, and residents.

Through proactive community outreach efforts including two community meetings, we gathered public input for the future of the Plaza. We found that major priorities for stakeholders included centralizing bus service, improving safety and security, increasing connectivity between spaces, making it easier to walk and bike through the area and enhancing the Plaza as a vibrant and welcoming public space.

This vision builds on the most recent reconfiguration of the Plaza completed in 2015. The City took lead on developing this revised vision taking into account pedestrian safety concerns and two new projects that have emerged, the Downtown Transit Connector and the Providence Intermodal Transportation Center.

Highlights include:

   - Between the skating rink and Burnside Park, East Approach will be closed to buses and cars creating a single connected park space between Biltmore and Burnside Parks.
   - A new prominent crosswalk will be created in the center of the Plaza, improving pedestrian safety and creating a welcoming front door from Fulton Street, to the Plaza, and across Washington Street through to Burnside Park.
   - To the east of the new crosswalk location, the Plaza between Fulton and Washington Street will be transformed into a new public space with shaded seating, landscaping, and public art.
   - Fulton Street will be converted to a two-way street with parallel parking on both sides to improve vehicular circulation surrounding the Plaza.
   - Concentrating RIPTA service and bus berth locations on Washington Street, making it two-way for buses only, rerouting car travel to Fulton Street.
   - Longer-term improvements, such as future buildings around the Skating rink, and redesigning the Plaza in front of the skating rink, are envisioned to increase capacity for events at the rink and the visibility of the rink, while providing additional space for cafes, offices, bathrooms, and warming areas for rink patrons.
