SPECIALMEETING – HOTEL EXPRESS – 1/6/20

Back inMarch of 2017 SPNA participated in a community meeting, hosted by Councilor Mary Kay Harris (Ward 11), to discuss a proposal by owners of Hotel Express tobuild a 5-story, 91-room Holiday Inn Extended Stay hotel at 375 Pine Street. This location is the current site of a parking lot & a vacant building(formerly occupied by the Greater Providence YMCA), & the site is mostvisible at the corner of Pine & West Franklin Streets (also known as ServiceRoad #7). As it appears that Hotel Express is now prepared to move forwardwith their plans to construct this hotel in our neighborhood SPNA has acceptedCouncilor Harris’s invitation to host a Special Meeting to continue that communitydiscussion so that our neighbors may obtain additional information &details about the potential development, provide additional feedback & addressconcerns about impacts to our neighborhood, & collect/answer additionalquestions. The meeting will be held on Monday, January 6th, 2020, from 6pmuntil 8pm, at a location to be determined & announced by the end of thismonth. We urged all residents who live within that vicinity to reserve thisdate/time in your calendars & do your utmost best to attend this meeting.

SPNA Regular Meetings are held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month,& for the month of January in 2020 that meeting will be held on Tuesday, January21st in which representatives from the Providence Coalition of NeighborhoodAssociations will meet with our neighbors again as a follow up on their priorask of SPNA to join their coalition (May 2019 Regular Meeting), along with representativesfrom the Washington Park Association (WPA) & Save the Bay to meet ourneighbors to discuss their concerns & present their ideas to address environmental issuesat the Port of Providence, with an ask for SPNA to join them in such efforts.

As indicated above, SPNA also holds Special Meetings toaccommodate other topics & additional meeting requests that cannot be heldin our regular meetings. In addition to the meeting on Monday, January 6th SPNAwill hold another Special Meeting on Wednesday, January 29th so thatrepresentatives from the City of Providence may meet our neighbors to collectfeedback to include in the City’s 5-Year Consolidated Plan to the U.S.Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD), as well as learn moreabout funding opportunities through the Ely Grant which is managed by the City’sDepartment of Arts, Culture & Tourism (ACT) and the Partnership forProvidence Parks.
