Summit Neighborhood Association
Hi neighbors,
After a hiatus of a few months while SNA has focused on administration of the Ward 3 area neighborhood aid program, we'll host our normal July meeting (Monday 7/20, 7pm) virtually via Zoom. Please e-mail SNAProv at gmail.com for a Zoom invitation if you'd like to participate! Please also e-mail any items you'd like to discuss, so we can add them to our agenda. And finally, if you are interested in joining the SNA Board for 2020-2021, please let us know (and join us for the 7/20 meeting!). The more dedicated volunteer capacity we have, the more we can do to serve. We'd love to hear from you!
Best,Ethan Gyles,(President, Summit Neighborhood Association)

South Providence Neighborhood Association
Good afternoon neighbors! As the South Providence Neighborhood Association (SPNA) continues to adhere to the guidelines issued by our government agencies to prevent the spread of COVID-19, we will review options for resuming monthly meetings virtually. In the meantime we want to provide you updates on issues & events directly impacting our neighborhood:
BARBARA JORDAN II
As indicated in an article from Providence Business News, Rhode Island Housing announced their selection of Omni Development Corp. & the Wingate Cos. as the developers for the Barbara Jordan II housing development in our neighborhood. Thank you to all of our neighbors, Neighbors for Revitalization (N4R), Direct Action for Rights & Equality (DARE), & all other supporters in their efforts for ensuring a robust community engagement process that led to today's outcomes. SPNA will keep you posted on next steps & the continuation of the engagement process as the developers move forward.
CENTER FOR DYNAMIC LEARNING (CDL)
The Center for Dynamic Learning (CDL), through its Summer Teen Apprenticeship Program (TAP), will focus on revitalizing the Southside this summer. CDL presented their program to SPNA a year ago this month: as they did last year, CDL will identify homes in our neighborhood in need of repairs & the participating students will complete the repairs. The students in the Summer TAP receive a stipend & many of the students in TAP are residents of our neighborhood (CDL's office is based in SPNA's footprint). Attached is a flyer with more information & neighbors who would like to be selected for this program may apply by contacting Julissa Rivera at 401-461-1813 (julissa at cdlri.org) – the deadline for submitting an application is next Tuesday, July 7th.
POWER OF PLACE SUMMIT – 7/8
SPNA organized a session for the 2020 Power of the Place Summit, a virtual summit hosted by Grow Smart RI with sessions held every Wednesday throughout the summer, entitled Emphasizing Grassroots Community Engagement: The Best Path to Effective, Inclusive Community Development. This session will be held next Wednesday, July 8th & starts at 10am. Here is a description of the session: Whether it's housing, transportation, economic development, or bike mobility, communities of color & other historically excluded groups are often the last ones to be informed about ideas that can benefit their lives. Yet the lack of knowledge about such plans can cause people to fear or mistrust them & in some cases oppose those plans, viewing them as a means of further exclusion. In this session you'll hear from panelists about the importance of robust public engagement & how best to reach & engage underrepresented & disenfranchised populations with the aim of increasing equity & inclusion in strategies for community development. The panelists for this session are Gloria Johnson (West Elmwood Housing Development Corp.), Marta Martinez (Rhode Island Latino Arts), Paula Donovan (Elmwood Neighborhood Association), & Raymond Watson (Providence Community Equity Initiative). This session will be moderated by SPNA Chair Dwayne Keys, & the cost of attendance for this sole session is $10.00.
SPNA - RACIAL EQUITY
SPNA extends a special thank you to our neighbors & fellow neighborhood groups who joined us in committing our focus to championing racial equity & ensuring our neighborhoods are welcoming to all residents, especially our neighbors who are Black, Indigenous & People of Color (BIPOC). As we move forward with specific programs for these goals SPNA will announce those activities as they occur plus invite you to participate. Listed below are some areas that we’re currently moving forward in support of SPNA’s goals for racial equity:
- Community Engagement session at Grow Smart RI's 2020 Power of the Place Summit
- Participatory Budgeting
- Partnership with the RI Chapter of the American Planning Association
- Port of Providence (in collaboration with the Washington Park Association)
- Participation in the Coalition of Neighborhood Associations
- Barbara Jordan II Redevelopment
- Anti-Racism Committee of the Providence Human Relations Commission
- Racial disparities in Historical Preservation
- PPSD Re-Opening of Schools & Turnaround Plan
- 2020 Census
- Increasing participation in HomesRI & HEZ 02907 coalitions
Those items in bold are areas that SPNA was already initiating and/or involved with before the impacts of COVID-19 & the racial strife of the last couple of months. This list below is subject to change & is not encompassing of all SPNA activities. Please contact us if you have any additional questions or would like to learn more about (or sign up to participate/lead on behalf of SPNA) these topics.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Please feel free to contact us by phone at (401) 369-1334 or by email if you have any additional questions. You may also invite and share this communication with other neighbors interested in these activities and/or want to learn more about SPNA.
Best Regards,
Dwayne Keys
