Dear neighbor –
Together, we have worked diligently over the last few months to keep our employees, customers, patrons, and city, safe. From reconfiguring spaces to implementing new technologies, I thank the business community for stepping up in a big way. We’re all anxious to resume business-as-usual, but reopening our economy is complex. In order to ensure the safety of our community, it’s more just opening physicals doors.

As businesses continue to reopen, the City of Providence is committed to supporting employers and employees as they adjust to the new normal. To help accomplish this goal, the City will host a series of workshops for small businesses:
- On Tuesday, June 16, I invite you to join me, Commerce RI and city and state representatives from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m for a virtual workshop designed for salon and barbershop owners.
- On Wednesday, June 17 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. we will again gather for a second virtual workshop— Reopening your Restaurant: How to Survive and Thrive— this time, for restaurant owners and employees.
During the interactive workshops, participants will have the opportunity learn about city and state guidelines designed to best ensure the safety and health of their establishments, staff and clients. After a brief presentation, participants will be able to ask questions and share their reopening experiences. While the workshops are free, registration is required. For our Spanish-speaking attendees, simultaneous interpreting is available. To register and to submit questions in advance, click here.
I hope to see you tomorrow and Wednesday! The public health crisis has hit our small businesses hard, but our city has come together to repair, rebuild, and will reemerge stronger than ever.
Sincerely,
Jorge O. Elorza

| Hi David,
Last week, I announced our goal to return to full in-person learning when the next school year starts. I know that right now, August 31 feels far away for most students. But summer is just around the corner and there’s still some uncertainty for parents, administrators and kids. Today, I want to address some of the things we’re doing to support Rhode Island families this summer. |

| Our kids have been at home doing distance learning for months. I’m so proud of how well they’ve done, but there’s no question that distance learning is less than ideal. It’s also been incredibly hard for parents—especially parents of young children who have had to either stay home or find child care so they can go to work. It’s critical for both our kids’ development and for our economy that we have summer programming options.
Last month, I announced that summer camps and youth programs will be allowed to operate in-person starting on June 29. I’m glad that many programs plan to open, but we know that some programs that serve some of the most economically disadvantaged kids in our state are struggling to fund the changes they’ll need to make to follow our new rules.
To meet this need, we’re allocating $7.5 million in CARES Act funding to provide financial support to summer camps. This is designed to help programs follow new our coronavirus rules. It will cover the cost of things like hiring new staff or bringing in a daily cleaning crew. Interested organizations should visit ReopeningRI.com. to learn more and apply today. The application period is already open and applications are being approved on a rolling basis.
In addition to our existing programs, we also want to support continued virtual learning this summer. I’m excited to announce that Rhode Island public school students will have the opportunity to sign up for what we’re calling ‘SAIL Courses’ through RIDE. SAIL is a temporary program designed to enhance educational opportunities for our students. The goal is to provide all kids, from pre-K through recent high school graduates, with fun educational opportunities from taking extra-curricular arts classes to earning academic credit.
We know that some students, particularly high school students, may need to get a summer job to help support their families or earn spending money. But we want students to be able to prioritize their academics. To help with that, some SAIL programs—particularly classes in math and English--will be offering high school students a stipend. New programs of all types are being approved daily, so if you are a student of any age interested in taking advantage of one of these opportunities, please continue to check RIDE’s website. |

| We also know that many high school and college students need to earn money over the summer. And there’s no question that finding a summer job will be more difficult this year because of the pandemic. So, we’re creating the COVID-19 Response Youth Summer Jobs Program to support employers who hire Rhode Island youth for summer jobs related to our COVID response. This is being run through the Governor’s Workforce Board. More information and applications for employers are available on ReopeningRI.com.
We're all in this together.
