Dear Neighbor-

We hope you are all staying safe and healthy. The temporary adjustments you are making are contributing to the greater health of our community and I cannot thank you enough. As we head into the weekend, I’d like to share a few updates and reminders that will help keep us all safe.

Effective tomorrow, Saturday, March 21 at 5PM, the following establishments and facilities will be closed to the public until further notice:

   - Fitness Centers, Health Clubs, Health Spas, Gyms, Aquatic Centers
   - Hair Salons and Barber Shops
   - Massage Parlors and Body Works Establishments
   - Beauty Salons (Including tanning, nail and eyelash salons)
   - Tattoo Parlors
   - Flea Markets
   - Mass Gatherings (including social, community, spiritual, religious, recreational, leisure, and sporting gatherings and events of more than 10 people)

Please keep sharing hygiene and social distancing practices with your loved ones. Gatherings of any kind with more than 10 people will not be permitted. We are still urging everyone to stay home unless otherwise necessary. If you do go outside to get fresh air, please keep each other’s safety in mind and limit your group size, even if everyone appears to be healthy.

Establishments with food licenses are not allowed to offer dine-in options until further notice, but are still permitted to offer food for pick up, delivery and by using the drive-thru.

While City buildings remain closed at this time, Providence employees are working hard to ensure that all essential city services, including trash and recycling collection and Providence Water, are scheduled to go on uninterrupted. For a full list of operations changes, please visit our website and for the latest updates on local efforts to combat COVID-19 please visit PVDCOVID19.com.

Good afternoon –

Just wanted to provide everyone with any updates and resources that the City has compiled.

City of Providence COVID-19 Operational Changes

To mitigate the risk of the spread of COVID-19, the City of Providence has closed all city buildings to the public and made additional adjustments to city services. These operational changes that will help maintain the health and safety of Providence residents and employees while minimizing the disruption to services will go into effect at 12:01AM on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, and will be in place until further notice, pending additional guidance from State and Federal Health officials.

For more information, please visit www.PVDCOVID19.com

Update from the Department of Planning & Development

We thank you for your continued cooperation as the City updates its policies in response to the current public health crisis. Although all public facilities and City buildings are closed to the public, the Mayor announced a series of temporary operational changes that will help minimize disruption to the delivery of essential city services.

Effective as of 12:01AM, Wednesday, March 18, 2020, these changes will be standard for our community until further notice.

Below please note changes that directly impact the work of the Departments of Planning + Development and Inspections + Standards.

COVID-19: Restaurant Food Donation Recommendations

Effective Tuesday, March 17, 2020 through Monday, March 30, 2020 the following updates will take effect in Providence and throughout Rhode Island: gatherings of more than 25 people will not be permitted; and restaurants, bars, coffee shops and other food establishments cannot offer dine-in options.

We understand the ban on on-premise food consumption at food establishments in Rhode Island is challenging for local businesses. Delivery and take-out are still options. The Rhode Island Hospitality Association has provided recommended guidelines for take-out and delivery options: https://www.rihospitality.org/pdf/2020/Personal-Hygiene.pdf

At the same time, many businesses have reached out to offer food donations. All food preparation and distribution must follow Rhode Island food safety requirements issued by the Secretary of State: https://rules.sos.ri.gov/regulations/part/216-50-10-1

All food donation opportunities are can be submitted through the web-based application MEANS, which helps match food donors to meal sites. Donations of foods that can be prepared to-go will be useful. The Rhode Island Department of Health is pairing with MEANS to make sure that unused wholesome food is given to people in need instead of disposed of. Access the MEANS database by visiting: www.meansdatabase.com. For more information about this partnership, please visit: www.health.ri.gov/programs/detail.php?pgm_id=1118

COVID-19 Grocery Store Recommendations

Thank you for all you and your employees are doing to support Rhode Islanders during this challenging time. We know you are on the frontline of food access. As your store works hard to meet customer needs, please consider the following recommendations.

SOCIAL DISTANCING

Consider measures to achieve the social distance recommendation of six (6) feet distance between people.

   - Space workers and stagger work schedules.
   - Reduce the capacity of customers in your business at any one time to no more than 25 persons.
   - Create six-feet markers to remind customers to distance themselves at check-out lines.
   - Ensure all break areas accommodate social distancing.

SANITATION

   - Ensure cleaning and sanitation standards meet the CDC’s guidelines.
   - Provide ready access to hand sanitizer and hand sanitizer stations.
   - Request employees and customers abide by personal hygiene recommendations.
   - Encourage shoppers to only come in contact with items they are purchasing.

ALTERNATIVE SHOPPING OPTIONS

   - Identify alternative shopping options for customers.
   - Designated shopping times for highly vulnerable populations (e.g. older adults, ages 60+).
   - Provide delivery or curbside pick-up of groceries.

PRODUCT AVAILABILITY

   - Apply purchase limits on some key items to allow more customers to get what they need.
   - Maintain stable prices; do not “price gouge” (10% price increase).
   - Eliminate self-serve food stations (e.g salad bars).

MONITOR FOR SYMPTOMS

Key COVID-19 symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath.

   - Have a plan to monitor employees for key symptoms, daily.
   - Provide signage to discourage customers shopping with key symptoms.

Grab & Go Meal Sites

Our Grab & Go meal sites are providing free breakfast, lunch, and dinner to Providence youth ages 18 and under throughout the City of Providence. We are incredibly grateful to the staff, volunteers and local partners who have stepped up in a big way!

Ways to Support Food Access

Help ensure all Rhode Islanders have access to the food they need while preventing the spread of COVID-19. The best way you can help support this critical work is to make a financial donation to these organizations. https://bit.ly/2UsRFqK
Rhode Island Community Food Bank
United Way of Rhode Island
