Forrest, The city of Pawtucket did a traffic study. The traffic study does assume that the traffic will be using the Smithfield Ave exit, turning onto N. Main Street and traveling to the site.
Nowhere in the traffic study is there any mention of the air quality impacts of adding the trucks and vans. The area from Pidge to 6th street is most likely to be affected by the fumes.
There is a hearing tonight in Pawtucket because of the proposal to displace Morley Field.
Greg, could you share the zoom info?

Pawtucket does not care about this. Their study was a whitewash all they see is tax revenue. Pawtucket s study said minimal impact. It is likely to be some impact but maybe not as extreme as you say. After all Cooley chemical still has lots of truck visits and microfibers did too. Greg gerritt

Hi.
In the latest issue of Providence Magazine, I was reviewing the article on Ward 3 candidates and was alarmed to read about the proposed trucking center at the old Microfibres factory site on the Providence/Pawtucket line. This is the large abandoned parcel across the street from Jordan’s Jungle in the 545 mixed-use mill building.
I have had a workshop at 250 Esten Ave. for the last 3 years and am very familiar with the neighborhood and its traffic at all hours. I pass the Microfibres site every single day. Reading about the project in Providence Magazine is the first I’ve learned of it. There is nothing posted on site as far as I can tell. My initial concern is for heavy truck traffic on roads (and particularly narrow or acute angle corners) that are not designed for large tractor-trailer trucks. The intersections of Esten Ave. and Moshassuck St., Main St. and Moshassuck St., and Main St. and Grenville St. are not designed for large truck radius turns. In short, trucks must take up both lanes of traffic in order to negotiate turns at any of these intersections. This situation combined with current bus-stop locations, stop lights, and poor line of sight from various side roads is a recipe for backed up traffic, more danger to pedestrians and bicyclists, and accidents of all varieties.
Has there been a site plan review? Is anyone in Pawtucket looking at this situation seriously? What say do we have as an impacted neighborhood? Even if my immediate concerns were alleviated, I would be very, very concerned about increased large truck traffic on Esten Ave., Hope/East St., Main St. and Pawtucket Ave. Large truck idling (illegal but not enforced - I’ve called the Pawtucket police station and they knew NOTHING about the anti-idling law) and other problems would be serious issues.
Sincerely,
Forrest Snyder

Hopefully, someone in Pawtucket can discourage this proposed project. Bradley VanDerStad has been working to make neighborhood residents aware of the situation, and he started a petition. The city of Providence is finally taking an interest in North Main St; the report is available at https://www.providenceri.gov/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/NMS-Final-Report-20220615.pdf

Wow. Okay, so I should just chalk this up in the nobody cares/lost causes column?
Cooley gets 2 - 6 trucks MAX a day, if that. Unless they?re all coming late at night or early in the morning then I wouldn?t know. There are days when the loading docks are never ever used. But Cooley is a good example of the problems that may occur. Trucks can take 5 - 10 minutes blocking Moshassuck St. to get backed in - they have to drive over the sidewalk on the opposite side of the street AND onto Microfibres property to negotiate the tight space. Furthermore, trucks delivering into my building frequently block Esten Ave. The truckers are going to quickly learn this and reroute to other streets so they can get through.
If 10 trucks a day are expected, then I can understand the lack of concern. If 100 trucks a day are hoped for/expected, then that?s a whole ?nother basket of Moshassuck Mussels (commonly found all over town in little blue plastic bags). In order for any of the trucks to get there from 95, they?ll be using Main St., Hope St., Pawtucket Ave. and others.
I?m actually fine with a trucking center at the location, if I thought the streets were designed to accommodate a high level of large truck traffic. Cities need industrial areas and this one is as good as any. What I object to is poor planning and apparent lack of understanding of the impacts.
That?s my 2?.
Forrest
